About
This is a community for fanwork dedicated to the women of Star Trek, particularly those of the 2009 film. Our ongoing mission: to seek out personalities not defined by their husbands and sons, to explore the lives lived only offscreen, to boldly go where all of these women should have gone before.

This community may well owe its existence to this open letter to Winona Kirk.

Guidelines For Posting

Be focused on women. Genfic, femslash, and het that centers on canonically female-identified characters are welcome. This includes readings of these characters as genderqueer, transgender, or any other non-binary gender identity. Shipfic, especially for lesser-written-about characters, is lovely as long as it offers some kind of character-based insight/development. Is your Spock/Uhura fic really about who Nyota is? Is Joanna just windowdressing for your Kirk/McCoy, or does she have a real relationship with them? Please take a moment to consider the comm's purpose when you make your decision to post. This community exists to broadcast voices not usually heard, not just serve as another stop on your crosspost list.

Be inclusive. Though the treatment of female characters in TOS/AOS catalyzed this comm, any woman who has appeared in any Star Trek is fair game. Yes, we're into your exploration of Seven's gender identity, and yes, we want to know more about Jennifer Sisko besides the fact that she died.

Be creative. Meta? Yes please. If you made fanart particularly relevant to our interests, we want to see (hell yeah, your picspams and fanvids are wanted here). Amazing, obscure recs? Go for it!

Be constructive. It's okay to be upset about female characters getting the shaft, but remember, this comm exists to celebrate and expand on them.

Be Respectful. Those who identify as female express themselves in many ways, whether personally, romantically, sexually, or professionally. All posts should reflect a respectful attitude toward their varied lives and choices. This is a safe space for fans of female characters and their relationships; please avoid hasty generalizations and supply opportunities for positive discussion instead. "Tell me what you love most about Uhura" is great; "I don't usually like Uhura" is not.

Be Mindful of Your Privilege. Privilege exists along many axes, among them gender, race, class, ability, ethnicity, and body type. When discussing issues in the comm, please be mindful of how your statements may be perceived by others. We all have different experiences, and what may be an acceptable statement to you could be triggering/hurtful to someone else.

Be smart. All fic posts should be marked clearly as such, with title, author, rating, and any warnings you may have noted. Please place all fic and non-thumbnail-sized fanart behind an LJ cut. Mind your tags. Please limit WIP posts to once per week, using the "weekly digest" format to link to multiple chapters. Be aware that misogyny isn't the only problem that faces women either in fiction or in reality. Don't be a jerk.
